This Practice Is Helping Me Write Again

The simple mind trick that is helping me restart my writing career.

Writing, like anything in life, fades without use.

And after nearly two years of being away, writing now feels like threading a camel's head through a needle. And not just that, but also the self-discipline to write has completely left my bones. And when I manage to, it is a struggle to bring a draft to an end.

Penning words to create sentences — and molding sentences into seamless, coherent paragraphs, is a skill that must be learned and maintained by consistent practice. So through this experience, I’ve realized that we are not born talented — but naked, mute, and stupid — howbeit, we can learn.

And learn I did.

I scoured tips online, not only to improve my proficiency but to build consistency. One piece of advice struck me, though it was something I’d once dismissed — whether due to never having needed it or finding it too “feminine,” I’m not sure.

But the advice was simple: create a personal space dedicated to writing.

Naturally, Virginia Woolf’s essay; “A Room of One’s Own” came to mind. If anyone understood the importance of a private space for creative pursuits, it was Woolf. Looking back, I wonder why I…
