It’s no news that unhappiness is a terrible companion.

But what most people don’t know is just how damaging it is.

In 2011, Howard S. Friedman and Leslie R. Martin published a book titled The Longevity Project. The book focused on the findings from the ongoing and world’s longest-running longitudinal study, initiated by Psychologist, Lewis Terman.

The Terman Study which spanned over 80 years, starting from the early 1920s, studied over 1500 Americans, from California, selected based on high IQ, to find the relationship between high IQ and the potential for a happy, long, successful, and productive life.

After eighty years of study, Terman’s findings were shocking.

Besides finding no correlation between high IQ and high quality of life, Terman found that unhappiness not only impacted the unhappy individuals but shockingly, the life of those around them. And in this case, the spouses of unhappy people, especially men.
