Is Religion An Enemy To Enlightenment?
The truth I reckon is the way.
Have you encountered or found yourself in an argument with religious folks? This bunch can pull out the Hitlerian in you. As a Christian myself it took me a while to come to terms with this, being able to see how we come across to others and how totalitarian we can be in our arguments with others.
If I’m being honest, there is an overblown arrogance we have when it comes to communicating our beliefs. Usually assuming, (often consciously), that when someone can not see our point of view, it’s simply because they are carnally blinded, or the devil has blocked their understanding. Or our other favourite is, the things of the spirit can only be perceived by those who understand the things of the spirit.
While I too, holds the same beliefs and truths of these biblical passages, I’ve come to understand that using these scriptures to ward off arguments that could potentially expand our consciousness, is in itself a sign of ignorance.
Now the big question is; does religion blind people to the truth?
In my opinion, it does to some degree — but not only religion I must add. Humans have a tendency to hold on to what they’ve deemed to be morally sound. Especially when it’s accepted in society or passed down as some kind of tradition. So…
