Realities of nature
It was utter darkness all around him.
Within the darkness, Lekun saw faces and heard voices. There was a face with a smile; another seemed pleased; one had a marked expression of incredulity — and then there was one contemplating. The voices too found their way to him. And he could tell, a voice was regretful; another voiced mischief; one was envious. And another seemed to anticipate something. Like an eagle, his eyes moved from one face to another and from one voice to another, but none perceived him – none regarded – it was as though he was not there. And the more he would not be seen, the thicker the darkness became. And they pressed closer – and fell through his cracks.
There was a street in the darkness. Street lamps cast round shadows from one end to the other. There were figures too, walking and running and standing. They were the figures of those faces and voices, and they all carried on living – like they’ve always done.
As he meandered his way through the street – passed a barber’s shop, just before a grey-painted house, a lady in a tight red dress, dark hair, and bright hazel eyes, dashed out and slammed the door of the house. Just as she vanished into the street, a man followed, with the same energy. He wore a chino’s navy blue trousers and a sky blue sleeve shirt. He caught her in a parked car…
