How to Write Well

A Guide to basic writing

George Blue Kelly

--

Writing is simple, but simple writing isn’t simple. To write is simply to pee words. But to write simply is to intentionally curate your words. And not many writers do.

It cost zero dollars to make your writing decent. And one word holds the secret — intentionality.

To care about what you say and how you say it.

As a writer and author, who’s worked as an editor for various publications, and the founder of Real, I see writers struggle with the basics of good writing.

Here are simple steps, to help.

Plan & structure

Only lazy writers simply write.

It’s cathartic to write from pure emotion — in the spur of the moment. But don’t be a slave to your pen. When your pen’s stirred, let it dance, let it pour, and swirl as it pleases, but in the end, let it submit to your bidding, your demands, your guide.

Plan your article. Consider each sentence. Ponder its paragraph. Let all its parts be one. Let it show you paid attention.

Writing without structure hurts you. Readers will learn to skip your name, once you're known to write without deliberate thought to palatability.
