Though we may blame our tendency of easily getting bored as being part of a generation labeled to be internet addicts, Netflix-ers, and couch-potatoes. However, research has shown that there is more to it than meets the eye. What researchers found out was that our brains are programmed to feel bored.
The substantia nigra/ventral tegmental area (SN/VTA) is the area of the brain that responds to novelty. What most people do not know, however, is that there is an increase in dopamine in the brain in reaction to novelty.
So, when we feel bored about certain activities, places, or even people, it is because those things no longer trigger the release of dopamine in the substantia nigra/ventral tegmental area (SN/VTA).
All it takes is to do the same activities for thirty days before each day starts to feel the same. You can hardly tell if it is Thursday or Tuesday. Whether it’s taking the same route to work, or listening to your partner tell the same story over and over again, at some point, our brain will no longer be stimulated like it once was.
As humans, it’s only natural to get bored of repetitive tasks or chores. Like binge scrolling social media feeds. Reading tweets and retweeting. Liking and leaving halfassed…
